Around 100 years ago, scientists discovered that the color of an egg’s yolk is determined by the number of carotenoids it contains. These are antioxidants that help with the formation of vitamin A, which helps to improve the condition of our bones. Consequently, the richer the color of the yolk, the more healthy nutrients it contains for our bodies.
The color of the yolk is directly dependent on how the chicken that laid it was fed. If it had a uniform diet based exclusively on grain, then the yolk will be a pale yellow color. If the chicken’s diet contained corn, plants, and insects, then the color will have more of an orange tint to it. Some large egg farms even use a special scale with 15 different yellow-orange shades in order to determine the quality of their product.

In general, it’s preferable to consume eggs that have bright orange yolks since they contain the maximum amount of chemicals that our bodies need.
Sometimes, pale-colored yolks are the result of seasonal changes. In winter, egg yolks often become paler because of the relatively small amount of food given to chickens at this time of year. But, in most cases, a pale color is an indication of low-quality eggs and the poor health of the chickens producing them. Eggs of this kind won’t give you the required amount of healthy nutrients that you need.
You should always check the quality of the eggs by seeing what’s written on the box. Pay attention to the presence of any synthetic colorings that have been added, and buy eggs only from reliable suppliers and where the chickens are kept in good conditions.
