Millions of people around the world can’t wake up without a cup of coffee. Everyone loves the smell of coffee and enjoys it like nothing else. And, yes, coffee is beneficial, but latest studies suggest that drinking coffee in the morning on an empty stomach is not exactly a good idea.
When you drink coffee on an empty stomach, it raises the amount of hydrochloric acid in your digestive tract which can be painful for gastritis patients. This acid is not good for the food in your stomach too – if you eat a heavier meal, it will result in difficult protein digestion. When protein is not fully decomposed, it can cause a host of other problems such as bloating, inflammation, irritation and colon cancer.
This is the main reason why experts suggest that you shouldn’t drink coffee right after waking up. This unhealthy habit will cause a spike in your cortisol levels after which the body will have problems returning to normal. Cortisol control our biological clock and our ability to stay awake.
As you can see, there are more reasons to ditch the habit of drinking coffee on an empty stomach in the morning. We suggest having a breakfast before, or if you can’t eat in the morning, add some milk or butter in your coffee. This will reduce the harmful effects and you can still enjoy your cuppa Joe.
