What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a skin color disorder characterized by dark skin patches, and it is caused by an increase in the levels of melanine (the dark skin pigment). Excessive sunlight exposure, pregnancy, age, trauma and certain diseases can lead to melanine imbalance and the unaesthetic brown patches of this benign skin disorder.

The causes for this skin disorder can be divided into two categories: external and internal. The external causes can be any environmental factors like exposure to sunrays or chemical compounds (estrogen, progesterone, minocyclin , etc). On the other hand, the internal factors are more genetic in nature – people with darker skin tans have a higher chance of having this disorder.

Freckles, age spots and sun spots are caused by the dangerous ultraviolet sun rays which damage the melanin and lead to temporary or permanent discolorations. The discolorations most often appear on the hand and facial areas, but they can also appear in any body part that was exposed to sunlight.

Another factor that might cause skin colour changes are trauma or surgery scars, which leave dark spots even after the initial problem is gone.

Another form of hyperpigmentation is Melasma, which usually appears during pregnancy, but it can also appear in men. Melasma is also called a “pregnancy mask”, since it causes the appearance of brown spots on the facial area – mostly around the nose and cheeks. This problems usually disappears by itself after pregnancy and it doesn’t cause any larger problems

A Natural Cure for Hyperpigmentation:

  1. Take 1 spoon of powdered turmeric.
  2. Add 1 spoon of lemon juice.
  3. Stir well.
  4. Apply to your affected areas.
  5. Leave it to dry for 15 minutes.
  6. Wash with cold water.

After you apply the treatment, don’t immediately expose your skin to sunlight!

The best way to use the treatment is right before you take a shower. You should do the treatment regularly, 1-2 times a day, until you see some improvement.

This simple but effective cure originates from Ayurvede – an ancient Indian holistic healing system. The lemon is used because it brightens the skin and stimulates its pealing, and the turmeric, apart from being a great skin brightener (as the Indians definitely know), is an anti-inflammatory agent which also makes the skin shinier.

If your skin is too sensitive, you might want to dilute the lemon juice or use milk instead of it.
