Horse apple, Osage orange, monkeys’ wild ball, Adam’s apple … these are some of the names for maclura (maclura pomifera), a deciduous tree of the family mulberries originating from North America.

The fruits are green and yellow colored, ruffle the surface, and many argue that resemble the brain. This plant is not for eating while seeds and oil can be used in the diet.

This oil is the basis of many cosmetic products in the USA and can be found and capsules, tinctures and ointments based on this herb.

This tree is also great for making guitars and hunting bows, because it is very resistant and good transmitter of sound.

The tree can be as high as 15 meters, branched with horizontal branches that can hang down.

It is resistant to frost, blooms in June and July and fruits are ripe in September and October.

What is this herb beneficial for?

The herb is often used for strengthening the immune system and to treat gynecological problems, including cysts.

In folk medicine it is used for treatment of breast cancer, colon cancer, stomach, uterus cancer, throat, lung and prostate, as it is rich in antioxidants.
