I always like to keep epsom salts, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, activated charcoal, hydrogen peroxide at home for various reasons. They can be used for different purposes such as digestion, detoxifications and even cleaning. When it comes to cleaning, I usually use baking soda because it does a great job at scrubbing clean my sink and bathtub. On top of all of this it’s pretty cheap with a price point of 98cents per box. If we brake down baking soda in scientific terms –it is a chemical salt whose natural form is the mineral nahcolite and it most likely acts as an acid unless it is in an aqueous solution(water) in which case it is alkaline. Its’ chemical formula is NaHCO3, but we know it as sodium bicarbonate aka- baking soda. Despite it’s domestic benefits it can also be used for health purposes.

- It balances the pH
Conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis and cancer are known to thrive under acidic enviroments. Certain parts of the body such as the gut need an acidic pH for digestion. The skin, since it’s a detoxifying organ, is also acidic. The normal pH is between 7.3 or 7.4 and should be somewhat alkaline. This can be attchieved by drinking water with baking soda. It keeps things in homeostasis, hepls you heal your body and alkalines the blood and body.

If the body is overly acidic we have side effects such as heartburn, acid reflux which are sighs of magnesium or potassium deficiency and the LES(lower esophageal sphincter) not working properly. The job of the LES is connecting the stomach to the esophagus, and if it works properly it would not allow the acid to rise, leading to heartburn. We can prevent this by eating foods such as leafy greens, bannanas, avocado but also drinking water with baking soda. Since it helps our body to produce hydrocloric acid it will help us with heartburn, gas, burping etc.
- Kidney stones prevention
Iron defficiency can be noted in acidic urine , but , if you’re too defficient in iron meaning you have a very acidic urine, your kindeys can form kidney stones which are very painful. That’s why it is important to watch your diet especially your calcium to magnesium ratio. Take foods that are rich in magnesium and potassium. If you have the deficiency of these two but sufficiency of calcium your kidneys can form kidney stones. You can also get stiff joints, arthritis and in more severe cases-stroke or heart attack. Dehydration can also contribute to the formation of kidney stones . That’s why it’s important to drink plenty of water, especially water with baking soda since it carries minerals to the body and keeps the homeostasis healthier.
How To Encorporate Baking Soda Water In Your Daily Life?
Use 1 tbl spoon of baking soda mixed in a glass of water twice a day on an empty stomach. Once you start doing this, trace your pH levels. You will notice that your pH level has increased which means your body has become more alkaline. If you want you can increase the dose over time.
