The major cause for the increasing rate of childhood cancer is processed meat. The National Cancer Institute discovered that even 1,500 children die due to cancer every year in America.
According to an USC epidemiologists who has reported in a cancer research journal, children who eat more than 12 hot dogs per month have 9 times the normal risk of developing childhood leukemia.
Moreover, some other reports concerning the issue of Cancer Causes and Control, claim that children born to mothers who consumed at least one hot dog per week while being pregnant, have doubled the normal risk of developing brain tumors. This also refers to those children whose fathers ate hot dogs before conception.
However, the critics and some researchers explain that these kind of studies are difficult to conduct because not all people can recall what they have been eating in the past.
Nevertheless, the scientists still argue and claim that the results are very important and that this problem should be taken into account.
As a result of the discoveries from the previous studies, the researchers at the University of Minnesota have already modified their National Cancer Institute-sponsored study on childhood leukemia and it’s all because they want to explore the possible connection to hot dogs.
According to them, the major cause for the development of cancer might be the use of nitrites used to preserve processed meats, including hot dogs. When ingested in our organism, they are converted to highly carcinogenic nitrosamines.
The epidemiologist Dr. David Savitz of the University of North Carolina, and the author of one of the studies on pregnant women, said: “this is not a hazard at the level of tobacco smoke or high-fat diets. The rational response would be a small modification of your consumption.”

- Mechanically separated chicken
- Sodium phosphates,
- Sodium diacetate
- Sodium nitrite
