The use of frozen raw tuna has so far been linked to cases of Salmonella in 11 states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no deaths have been reported.
However, 62 people have been diagnosed with Salmonella, and each reported eating sushi within a week prior to the diagnosis.
The Osamu Corporation has taken action as a result of this connection, opting to announce two recalls of tuna that was processed in an Indonesian plant. A shipment of yellowfin tuna chunk meat that was sent to AFC. Corp for use in the United States for sushi franchises has been recalled.
That shipment had the lot number 68568 and was sent between May 20 and May 26. Meanwhile, a lot of frozen tuna that was sold to restaurants between May 9 and July 9 has also been recalled.
The dates of illness for the Salmonella cases were reported as early as March 5 to July 7. The youngest individual who is ill was age 1, while the oldest was 83, according to the CDC reports. Fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea are all symptoms of salmonella. They can occur anywhere from one to three days after consuming the contaminated product.
Individuals with weakened immune systems should avoid shellfish and raw fish, per CDC recommendations.
Currently, cases of the recalled product have predominantly been found in California. So far, there have been 34 cases recovered from the sunshine state. Meanwhile, 11 cases were found in Arizona, six in New Mexico, four in Minnesota, and one each in Michigan, Mississippi, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Illinois.
Other recent issues reported concerning salmonella have involved puppy chews carrying the illness. Raw chicken has to be handled with care and everything carefully washed after preparing raw chicken because of the risk of salmonella. There are also certain turtle species that should be handled with care, as they typically carry the disease on their shell.
